Today on the blog I have a Q&A with Jodi Meadows, Author of Before She Ignites (Out 12 September 2017) and Co author of My Lady Jane with Cynthia Hand & Brodi Ashton!
Gryffindor Books: When you were growing up who or what first got you into reading?
Jodi: I’ve always liked stories, but I didn’t like reading for myself until I was in third grade. I was home sick, but I happened to have a library book. I wish I could remember what it was called, because I’d love to reread it, but regardless, it hooked me. I picked up more books after that, and more and more and suddenly I couldn’t stop reading.
Gryffindor Books: When did you realize that you wanted to be a writer? Did your love for reading influence you to write?
Jodi: Until about seventh grade, I assumed books appeared on library shelves by magic. But that year, my English teacher read WAIT TILL HELEN COMES by Mary Downing Hahn, and something about that book made me realize that people wrote books and, if I wanted, I could be one of those people.
Gryffindor Books: How many books have you published?
Jodi: Before She Ignites will be number seven. I have a trilogy already out – beginning with Incarnate – and a duology – beginning with The Orphan Queen – and a standalone I cowrote with two friends, called My Lady Jane.
Gryffindor Books: Please tell us a little about My Lady Jane and Before She Ignites.
Jodi: My Lady Jane is a comic retelling of the tragedy of Lady Jane Grey, who was queen for nine days before she was locked away in the Tower of London . . . and later beheaded. My cowriters and I set out to, ahem, fix the situation.
Before She Ignites is a more serious book about a girl imprisoned for trying to expose a secret about illegal dragon trafficking. There are, as you might have guessed, dragons, magic powers, and islands that are gods.
Gryffindor Books: What is the correct way to read your books?
Jodi: In general, I recommend reading the first book first when it comes to series, but you do you, I guess?
Gryffindor Books: Are you having any events coming up? If so how can we find out about them?
Jodi: Yep! I have a few events coming up for Before She Ignites:
September 12 – 6pm – I’ll be at Books of Wonder in NYC with C.J. Redwine, Erin Summerill, and Dhonielle Clayton
September 14 – 7pm – Erin and I will be at Blue Willow Bookshop in Houston, TX
September 17 – 3pm – I’ll be at One More Page Books in Arlington with Martina Boone and Lisa Maxwell
Gryffindor Books: Thanks for agreeing to do this with me!
Jodi: Thank you!
